This betrayal has extended from banning traditional Muslim dress to forging military and economic alliances with the United States.   The West, in turn, and the United States in particular, is the â€Å"far enemy†.   Al-Qaeda’s paradigm holds that the corrupt and illegitimate rulers of the Arab and Muslim world cling to power only due to the sponsorship of the United States. This claim is not entirely without merit, and is a common claim heard in the Arab world particularly.   To illustrate the depths of the contempt for secular Muslim governments, the manual describes them as being worse than European imperialists, a scathing indictment from such a xenophobic movement.[2] Al-Qaeda initially focused on the near enemy, but after a strategic rift within the group, which was won by Osama bin Laden, the far enemy came into the crosshairs.   The idea was that a catastrophic attack would be easier to organize and execute in an open society and that an attack in the continental United States would bring attention to their cause that they would not gain by bombing all the embassies in Africa. Holden’s preoccupation with sex, and the maturity that comes with it, is too much for the sixteen year old. â€Å"Sex is something I just don’t understand. I swear to God I don’t,† explains Holden (Salinger, 63). Holden feels that by losing his innocence, he will lose his childhood as well. Holden fears that he would lose all memories of his dead brother Ally along with his innocence. It is this fear that is behind all of Holden’s actions. Holden makes false promises to himself about calling his love interest Jane, he gets scared and decides just to talk with a prostitute, and he is not mature enough to deal with a romantic relationship on his own. He even has an argument with his date Sally about a lofty fantasy he has about going away marrying her. Holden wildly describes his vision, â€Å" e could live somewhere with a brook and all and later on, we could get married or something,† (Salinger, 132). Holden is not able to face the realities of his life, and in this instance he delves into a fantasy life where he doesn’t have any real responsibilities. Holden and Conrad are different in the way they deal with responsibilities. Conrad is too quick to assume responsibilitie s, while Holden fears the consequences of growing up and inheriting many responsibilities. The second difference between Conrad and Holden is that they differ in their perspectives on life. Holden is an idealist. Holden does not want to look at the realities of life in the same way that he does not want to accept responsibility. After Holden gets beat up by the pimp Maurice, he imagines himself shooting him in the gut. â€Å"Six shots right through his fat hairy belly. Then I’d throw my automatic down the elevator shaft after I’d wiped off all the finger prints and all,† he narrates (Salinger, 104). Holden is not only an idealist, but someone who gets lost in his own childlike fantasies as well. Holden makes empty threats about committing suicide, but he comes out of his moments of passion long enough to make an excuse to not go through with killing himself. On the other side of the spectrum, Conrad is fully capable of killing himself. Being a realist, he did not fantasize about attempting suicide. No, Conrad Jarrett tried to kill himself. Both the characters realize that they can never get their brothers back. However, Conrad tries to accept the reality of his situation (but fails) while Holden just tries to run away from facing the truth. In Holden’s ideal world, he would rather be dead in Ally’s place. In Conrad’s world, he accepts that Bucky is dead, but his realistic outlook makes him feel guilty and trapped to the point of suicide. Although these characters seem drastically different in their approach to their harsh situations, they are similar in one specific way. Conrad Jarrett and Holden Caulfield both desire to have extreme control in their own lives, and even in the lives of others. â€Å"Id like to be more in control † Conrad exclaims. However, it is more than just being in control. Conrad wants to control his emotions; partially because he has been taught by his mother to keep them down, and because he does not want to feel the emotions that have built up inside of him. Whenever something happens that is out of his control, Conrad snaps. When his friend Karen kills herself, Conrad says, â€Å"I just wish Id known I couldve done something,† (Redford). Conrad’s life is falling apart, and it is accelerated by his desire to keep it all together. Once Conrad realizes that he has to release his emotions in order to regain control, he does so in outbursts around his relatives, parents and friends. Holden desires to control his own life, but always finds himself out of control. In the situation with Maurice, Holden’s idealistic views take over, and he finds himself imagining what would happen if he had control of his body and emotions. Holden also wants to control time, trying to prolong and preserve his innocence and childhood. However in a turning point for Holden, he realizes that he is not a child anymore. An old teacher of Holden’s causes him to feel very uncomfortable when he finds the teacher petting his head while he is asleep. Later, Holden realizes that in order to be more in control of his situation, he has to stop running. He shoots down his own idealist plan to run out west when Phoebe asks to go with him. â€Å"I’m not going away anywhere. I changed my mind,† Caulfield states (Salinger, 207). With this one simple decision, Holden begins the transition into his adulthood; he has finally stopped running. The characters are similar because their desire for control initially blocks their prospects of improving, but then is key in their respective realizations about their situations. Even though Caulfield and Jarrett desire to have supreme control in their lives, they differ in their outlooks on life and on the prime thing they want to preserve in their own lives. Caulfield and Jarrett struggled, but by finally learning to let go they both found the control they had been searching for. Although the characters are opposites when it comes to their idealistic and realistic personalities, they are strangely similar because they have both lost a brother. It is amazing that these characters were able to overcome such difficult situations. Their resolve will forever be admired.

Fossil fuels are coal and oil. The downfall of using fossil fuels is that they are limited. Fossil fuels are developed from the remains of plants and animals that died millions of years ago. Burning fossil fuels has other downfalls, too. All the burning that is required to turn the turbines releases much sulfur, nitrogen gases, and other pollutants into the atmosphere. The cleanest, cheapest, and least polluting power plant of the two types is the hydroelectric power plant. The main reason most countries use thermal versus the hydroelectric is because their countries don't have enough concentrated water to create enough energy to generate electricity. A free neutron from the nucleus that just split splits another nucleus. This process continues on and is called a chain reaction. The steam that boiling the water makes is used to turn turbines, which in turn, generate electricity. Fission happens inside a carefully monitored nuclear reactor, when being used in a nuclear power plant. The fission process that nuclear power plants use spends approximately 30,000 tons of highly radioactive waste a year. (General Information) In a nuclear power plant, Uranium is used as fuel to boil the water for the steam that makes the turbines turn. So, uranium is, in a sense, the coal of a coal-fired power plant. When fueling nuclear power plants, the uranium arrives as uranium-enriched pellets. These pellets are an equivalent to one ton of coal. The pellets are sealed in tubes that are made of a strong heat- and corrosion-resistant metal alloy. This metal alloy will protect people and the environment from the high levels of radiation that the uranium is giving off. The tubes are bundled together to make a fuel assembly. The assemblies are put inside the reactor to create heat that will boil the water. The fuel assemblies are used until they are depleted. A fuel assembly is depleted when it no longer gives off enough energy to turn the turbines. Once every year, one third of the nuclear fuel in a reactor is replaced with fresh fuel. The used-up fuel is called spent fuel. Spent fuel is highly radioactive and is the primary form of high-level nuclear waste. His style, combined with intellectual thoughts and ideas, set the foundation for what would become known as metaphysical poetry. Donne's style of writing was not only a significant factor in the Renaissance, but also the transition into "The Age of Reason". In Sonnet 10, from Holy Sonnets, he is able to contribute to the Renaissance ideal described in the preceding quote. "A rebirth of the human spirit...," describes a change in emotion that stems from a religious belief. Before the Renaissance, life and death were thought to be predetermined. Towards the end of the Renaissance, poets began to question parts of this belief, and as a result, the value of life came into question. In Sonnet 10, John Donne questions how powerful death is. He first challenges "Death" as he says "Death, be not proud, though some have called/thee/Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;" in lines one and two. Yet, in lines seven and eight, Donne declares the power of "Death" by saying "And soonest our best men with thee do go, /Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery." These two quotes contradict each other, however, the question is clear: What is the power of death? Donne answers this question in the last line: "And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die." However, the reader at that time had his/her own answer to find. Donne had introduced a new thought. He spoke of "death" as a noun, yet spoke to "Death" as a being, without relating it to God. To dissociate God and Death, and then treat Death as an entity was indeed a new idea. "A rebirth of the human spirit" may have been the realization of the value of life, as a result of the questioning of the set belief. "...A realization of the human potential for development," is an accurate description of the Renaissance. People were beginning to accept change in social institutions as well as in many traditional beliefs. Poets, such as John Donne, were questioning ideas that seemed to be set in stone. They were also changing the structure and style of poetry.

Maturity in the Catcher in the Rye Maturity is a process in life that usually no one can run away from. The novel the Catcher in the Rye, by J. D Salinger, tries to disprove that lesson through its protagonist. Holden often behaves like a prophet or a saint, pointing out the â€Å"phonies† around him because he believes they are not as mature as he is, but as the novel progresses, Holden makes choices that prevents him from maturing rather than enabling him to mature. Holden’s mail goal is to resist the process of growing up. Holden also mocks the adults around him to make him feel better.To cope with society, Holden alienates himself from the people he considers â€Å"phonies†. Usually, novels such as The Catcher in the Rye tell the story of a young protagonist’s growth to maturity; ironically, Holden’s main goal is to resist the process of maturity. Holden does not want to mature because he fears change and is overwhelmed by complexity. On page 20 1 of the novel, Holden says â€Å"Somebody’d written ‘fuck you’ on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and finally some dirty kid would tell them†.This quotation shows that Holden is scared and worried about Phoebe growing up. Eventually, Phoebe will learn what the word means just like Holden did. There is no stopping the process but Holden erases the sign anyways to symbolize his determination. He does eventually realize that he cannot stop the process when he tries to erase another sign that does not come off. Not only is Holden afraid of change, but he refuses to acknowledge this fear so whenever he is forced to, he invents a fantasy that adulthood is a world of â€Å"phonies†. Holden shows this when he says â€Å"Sex is something I just don’t understand.I swear to God I don’t† on page 93. Instead of acknowledging that having sex scares and mystifies him, Hol den invents a fantasy that adulthood is a world of superficiality and hypocrisy by telling the readers horrible things about sex. The first step to solving a problem is admitting that there is one. Holden does not even know he has a problem let alone admitting it. At the end of the novel, Holden does however find out that he has a problem but he still does not want to admit it which suggests that he is still trying to achieve is goal and believes that one day he will achieve it.Holden’s view of society shows that Holden only points out the phonies around him to make him feel better, yet he does not realize that he is flawed. Through out the novel, Holden criticize adults behind his smiles because it makes him feel superior without having the sense of guilt since the adults does not know. This is shown when Holden vents his feelings about Spencer’s advice. On page 8 he says â€Å"Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then itâ€⠄¢s a game, all right—I’ll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren’t any hot-shots, then what’s a game about it?Nothing. No game.. †. Hiding behind Holden’s nodding and smiling is himself cursing and mocking Spencer. While Spencer is trying to tell Holden the importance of playing by the rules, Holden mocks his analogy instead of looking at the main point which shows that he doesn’t really care about what Spencer has to say even though it has been established that Holden thinks about Spencer quite a lot. Every time Holden criticises the â€Å"phonies† around him, he criticises them in a way that convinces the reader that he is right to build up his self esteem.This is shown when Holden says â€Å"Then I tried to get them in a little intelligent conversation, but it was practically impossible. You had to twist their arms. You could hardly tell which one was the stupidest of the three of them. Then the thre e of them of them kept looking all around the goddam room, like as if they expect a flock of goddam movie stars to come in any minute. † On page 73. Holden believes that the three women were looking around the room because they are stupid, but he does not consider the fact that the three women were looking around the room because they were bored of him and wanted him to go away.Holden makes a statement that can be easily argued into a true fact that is written in stone and cannot be erased by using slang and the unique tone of voice he has. It makes everything he criticises seem true which makes himself feel better. Holden needs to realize that his view of society is wrong and that children will have to grow up and that there is no way to stop it. Holden says on page 119 â€Å"God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. Most kids are. They really are† because he loves children. Throughout the novel, Holden has never cr iticised, offend or cursed at children.He always says nice things about them. This is because he likes children and he does not want children to mature into young adults. On the contrary, Holden’s view of a perfect childhood is as incorrect as his view of the adult world as entirely â€Å"phoney,† and just helps Holden hide from the fact that the complex issues he will have to face in growing up terrify him. This form of delusional craziness can only last so long. Holden will eventually grow up, whether he likes it or not. Mr. Antolini and Phoebe both make it clear that unless he learns to accept the complexities of adulthood, he will end up, at best, bitter and alone.To cope with society and the adult world, Holden alienates himself from the people he considers â€Å"phonies† so that he will be able to resist growing up. Throughout the novel it is seen that Holden’s alienation is the cause of most of his pain but it is also a source of Holden’s st rength. This is shown when His loneliness gets him into his date with Sally Hayes, but his need for isolation causes him to insult her and drive her away. As the novel progresses it shows that Holden desperately needs human contact but his protective wall of bitterness prevents him from having interactions with other humans for too long.He wants to have a relationship but he does not want to commit to it because he knows that when he does commit to a relationship, he will turn into an adult and live an adult life. That is why he tells Sally Hayes to run away with him. Holden does not want to deal with the complexities of the world around him so he tries to escape it to resist the process of growing up. Holden tries to escape the adult world by not thinking about it and dreaming of a world where nothing changes.But when Holden goes to the Museum of Natural History, it gives him something to think about. He says â€Å"The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. . . . Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you. † (page212) The Eskimos are silent, and always the same. Holden can think about and judge the Eskimo in the display case, but the Eskimo will never judge him back. It troubles him that he has changed each time he returns, while the museum’s displays never changes.They represent the simple and manageable vision of the perfect life that Holden wishes he could live and stay in forever. After reading the novel, readers learn that although Holden goal is crazy, in the end he has great determination. Readers notice that at the end of the novel, Holden has not changed. He still tries to resist growing up, he still mocks the people he considers phonies, and he still alienates himself from the people he considers â€Å"phonies†. Holden’s character is very unusual but it teaches readers about maturity and how hard it is to not gro w up.

Why is it then that we are often so upset when or favorite characters die in books, movies, or television? They are merely works of fiction passed on to us through text on a page or actors on a screen, and yet, they can often bring us to tears. One might just attribute this to the fact that humans are a sensitive bunch, but perhaps it is something else: deep within us, we all contemplate the meaning of life (and death), so each and every experience with death, especially those in media, remind us of our own mortality. Death has been a popular theme in literature for as long as literature has been around, partly because it was so common prior to the 20th century. Infant mortality, war, disease, and famine were all far more common, even in the western world.
